In the heat of battle, photographer Horace Bristol captured one of the most unique and erotic photos of WWII.
Bristol photographed a young crewman of a US Navy “Dumbo” PBY rescue mission, manning his gun after having stripped naked and jumped into the water of Rabaul Harbor to rescue a badly burned Marine pilot. The Marine was shot down while bombing the Japanese-held fortress of Rabaul.
“…we got a call to pick up an airman who was down in the Bay. The Japanese were shooting at him from the island, and when they saw us they started shooting at us. The man who was shot down was temporarily blinded, so one of our crew stripped off his clothes and jumped in to bring him aboard. He couldn’t have swum very well wearing his boots and clothes. As soon as we could, we took off. We weren’t waiting around for anybody to put on formal clothes. We were being shot at and wanted to get the hell out of there. The naked man got back into his position at his gun in the blister of the plane.”

So towritecomicsonherarms redid their favorite superheroes list, which I was going to do as well but mine has pretty much stayed the same (replace Batman with Thor and that’s my new list). So instead I thought I’d make a list of my favorite villains cuz I haven’t shared that yet so what the hell why not?
1) Dr. Doom- The evolution and psychology of Doom’s character is my favorite to this day.
2) Professor Zoom- In my opinion, Eobard Thawne and Barry Allen have the best Hero/Villain dynamic in comics.
3) Lex Luthor- Lex Luthor always adds an ideological aspect to stories, and the fact he’s a manipulative egomaniac who craves perfection is fun too.
4) The Crime Syndicate of Amerika- Just lumping all these guys together cuz evil versions of heroes is friggin cool.
5) Joker- Obligatory Joker on list (but seriously, the psychological aspects he brings to Batman stories are unrivaled).
6) Gorr the God Butcher- He’s a new villain and has only been in one story, but he’s the most recent villain I’ve taken seriously in a long time.
7) Black Manta- Aquaman hasn’t always been cool, but Black Manta sure as hell has been.
8) Brainiac- Whenever Brainiac shows up, you know shit is going down.
9) Captain Cold- Another Flash villain, but I love the fact he views crime as a job and isn’t one dimensionally evil.
10) Charles Xavier II- Another recent villain, but an evil child of Charles Xavier has so much potential.
Some old fella came up to me at work and asked a question only he didn’t quite figure out if he should call me “sir” or “ma’am” by the time he got to the end of his sentence and in a moment of apparent panic ended up saying “captain” instead. Absolutely made my day.
